Top 10 Worship Songs of 2012: (Also, Christmas Carol Worship); Includes “Behold Our God”,”Lay Me Down”,”O the Blood”, & more! (Ep 019)

Play

This episode lists my personal favorite new (to me) praise and worship songs that I had discovered in 2012.

Being that when this was recorded, we were still in the Christmas season (which many Christians celebrate until the Feast of the Epiphany, which this year is Jan 6), the episode begins with some worship based off of Christmas Carols.

Every song that made my countdown will have a snippet played, an examination of its lyrical content, a demonstration of how I would play it in a live setting, and my recommendations as to the best places to play these songs.

Each song that made the list is under copyright and thus I am unable to play any of these songs in their entirety on this podcast, until granted such by the copyright holders. But they are under CCLI (Christian copyright licensing incorporated); license holders have permission to display lyrics to these songs for their church services, youth groups, etc. To join CCLI, go to www.ccli.com.

SILENT NIGHT
Franz Grueber, 1818

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born!

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy Holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth!
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth!

JOY TO THE WORLD
Isaac Watts, 1674-1748; ANTIOCH from George F. Handel, 1685-1759

Joy to the world! The Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heav’n and nature sing
And heav’n and nature sing
And heav’n and heav’n and nature sing

Joy to the world! The Savior reigns
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat repeat the sounding joy

He rules the earth with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders, wonders of His love.

Our peace eternal making.

THE WEXFORD CAROL
Irish carol, 12th century

Good people all this Christmas time
Consider well and bear in mind
What our good God for us has done
In sending His beloved Son
With Mary holy, we should pray
To God with love, this Christmas Day
In Bethlehem, upon that morn
There was a blessed Messiah born.

The night before that happy tide
The noble Virgin and her guide
Were long time seeking up and down
To find a lodging in the town.
But mark how all things came to pass
From ev’ry door, repell’d alas!
As long foretold, their refuge all
Was but an humble ox’s stall.

Hallelujah, Hallelu-jah.
Hallelujah, Hallelu-jah.

Near Bethlehem, did shepherds keep
Their flocks of lambs and feeding sheep
To whom God’s angels did appear
Which put the Shepherd in great fear.
“Prepare and go” the angels said,
“To Bethlehem, be not afraid.
For there you’ll find this happy morn,
A princely babe, sweet Jesus born.”

With thankful heart and joyful mind
The Shepherds went the babe to find
And as God’s angel had foretold
They did our Saviour Christ behold.
Within a manger He was laid
And by His side, the Virgin maid
Attending on the Lord of life
Who came on earth, to end all strife.

There were three wise men from afar
Directed by a glorious star
And on they wandered night and day
Until they came where Jesus lay.
And when they cam unto that place,
Where our Beloved Messiah laid.
They humbly cast them at His feet
With gifts of gold and incense sweet.

GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN
African-American Spiritual

When I was a seeker
I sought both night and day
I asked the Lord to help me
And He showed me the way

Go tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born!

He made me a watchman
Upon the city wall
And though I am a Christian
I am the least of all

HOW BRIGHTLY BEAMS THE RADIANT STAR
Philipp Nicolai 1556-1608, Tr: William Mercer 1605-75, Harm. by J.S. Bach

How brightly beams the morning star!
What sudden radiance from afar
Doth glad us with its shining?
The ray of God that breaks our night
And fills the darken’d souls with light
Who long for truth we’re pining
Thy Word, Jesus, truly feeds us
Rightly leadus us, Life bestowing

Through Thee alone can we be blest
Then deep be on our hearts imprest
The love that Thou hast borne us
So make us ready to fulfill
With burning zeal Thy holy will
Though men may vex or scorn us
Saviour, Jesus, never lose Thee
For we choose Thee, thirst to know Thee.
All we are and have we owe Thee!

O praise to Thee who came to save
You conquered death and burst the grave
Each day new praise resoundeth
You are the Lamb who once was slain
the Friend whom none shall trust in vain
Whose grace always aboundeth
Sing, you heavens: tell the story of His glory
Till His praises flood with light earth’s darkest places.

O HOLY NIGHT
W:Placide Cappeau (1808-1877), Tr: Placide Cappeau (1808-1877),
M:Adolphe-Charles Adam (1803-1856)

O Holy Night! The Stars are brightly shining
It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope the weary world world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn

Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices!
O night divine! O night when Christ was born
O night divine! O night O night divine!

RING OUT YE WILD AND MERRY BELLS
Words: unknown; M: C. Maitland
source: Carols old and Carols New (1916)

Ring out, ye wild and merry bells
Ring out the old, old story
That first was told by angel tongues
From out the realms of glory.
Peace on earth was their sweet song, glory in the highest!
Echoing all the hills away, glory in the highest!

Ring sweet bells, ring evermore
Peal from ev’ry steeple.
Christ the Lord, shall be our God
And we shall be His people.

Ring out ye silv’ry bells, ring out
Ring out your exultation
That God with man is reconciled.
Go tell it to the nations.
Therefore let us all today, glory in the highest!
Banish sorrow far away, glory in the highest!

ANGELS FROM THE REALMS OF GLORY
James Montgomery (1816), Henry Smart (1867)

Angels from the realms of glory
Wing your flight o’er all the earth
Ye who sang creation’s story
Now proclaim Messiah’s birth.

Come and worship, come and worship
Worship Christ the newborn King.

Shepherds, in the field abiding
Watching o’er your flocks by night
God with man is now residing
Yonder shines the infant Light.
Sages leave your contemplations
Brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great Desire of Nations;
Ye have seen His natal star.

Saints, before the altar bending
Watching long in hope and fear.
Suddenly the Lord, descending
In His temple shall appear.

Advent IV! Newtown; The Everlasting – Fellowship Church; Hope In the Lord; Watchman Tell Us Of the Night; Lift Up Your Heads; Chant; A Christmas Story ! (Ep. 017)

Play

This episode is dedicated to the victims, their families, and the heroes of Sandy Hook Elementary School. I will continue to pray and listen.

  • What has been our Advent progress these last few days, in the midst of Christmas preparations?
  • Why has A Christmas Story become so strongly loved during this season?
  • It is a funny movie; but aren’t there other funny Christmas movies out there?
  • It’s a quotable movie; but are there other highly-quotable Christmas movies?
  • Is the film popular because it represents an America that no longer exists?
  • Two Major Advent Themes:
  1. Every single material gift in this world–no matter how wonderful–will always fail to fully satisfy our deepest longings. (Heaven is our home, where nothing will ever disappoint us).
  2. How are the dual themes of judgment and mercy shown in this film?
  • We need to be ready for the judgment we all will receive; we need to be right with God.
  • This Christmas, we can ask God to come alive for us, reveal Himself to us, expecting that our lives will be changed.

LIFT UP YOUR HEADS, YE MIGHTY GATES
George Weissel, 1642 (Based on Psalm 24)

Lift up Your heads, ye mighty gates
Behold the King of glory waits!
The King of Kings is drawing near
The Savior of the world is here.

O blest the land, the city blest
Where Christ the ruler is confest!
O happy hearts and happy homes
To whom the King of triumph comes!

Fling wide the portals of your heart
Make it a temple, set apart
From earthly use for heav’ns employ,
Adorned with prayer and love and joy.

So, come my sov’reign, enter in!
Let new and nobler life begin;
Thy Holy Spirit guide us on
Until the glorious crown be won.

WATCHMAN TELL US OF THE NIGHT
John Bowring, 1825, Joseph Parry 1879

Watchman, tell us of the night
What its signs of promise are
Trav’ler o’er yon mountain height
See that glory beaming star.
Watchman does its beauteous ray
Aught of joy or hope foretell?
Trav’ler yes: it brings the day
Promised day of Israel

Watchman, tell us of the night
Higher yet that star ascends
Trav’ler blessedness and light
Peace and truth its course portends
Watchman will its beams alone
Gild the spot that gave them birth?
Trav’ler ages are its own
See, it bursts o’er all the earth.

Watchman, tell us of the night
For the morning seems to dawn
Trav’ler darkness takes its flight
Doubt and terror are withdrawn
Watchman let thy wandrings cease
Hie thee to thy quiet home
Trav’ler, lo! the Prince of Peace
Lo! the Son of God is come!

O COME O COME EMMANUEL
veni veni Emmanuel, Latin 9th cent.; tr. by John Neale, 1818-1866

O Come Thou Dayspring from on high.
And cheer us by Thy drawing night.
Disperse that gloomy clouds of night
And put death’s dark shadows to flight

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to Thee, O Israel.

O Come Desire of Nations bind
In one the hearts of all mankind
Bid thou our sad divisions cease
And by Thyself our King of peace.

HOPE IN THE LORD
Robert Filoramo, Jr.

Our Lord is the eternal God
Creator of the ends of the earth
He does not grow faint nor grow weary
And His knowledge is beyond compare

He gives strength unto the fainting
For the weak He makes vigor abound
Though young men may faint and grow weary
And though, they stumble and fall

They that hope in the Lord
will renew their strength
They will soar as with the wings of eagles
They will run and never grow weary
They will walk and never faint

CREATOR OF THE STARS OF NIGHT
Latin, 9th century; Tr. by John M. Neale

Creator of the stars of night
Thy people’s everlasting light
Jesu, Redeemer, save us all
And hear your servants as we call

Thou grieving at the ancient curse
Should doom to death the universe
Has found the medicine full of grace
To save and heal the ruined race

Thou cames the Bridegroom of the Bride
As drew the world the evening tide
Proceeding from a Virgin shrine
The Spotless Victim all divine

At Whose dread Name, majestic now
All knees must bend, all hearts must bow
And things celestial Thee shall own
And things terrestrial, Lord alone.

O Thou Whose coming is with dread
To judge and doom the quick and dead
Preserve us while we dwell belo
From every insult of the foe.

To God the Father, God the Son
And God the Spirit, Three in One
Laud, honor, might and glory be
From age to age eternally.

***************SHOW NOTES***************
• What has been our Advent progress these last few days, in the midst of Christmas preparations?
• Why has this story captured our hearts?
• A Christmas Carol is a fundamentally religious work.
• In what ways does pre-conversion Ebeneezer Scrooge sound almost logical in today’s society? Is he hypocritical at any point?
• How are government programs (helpful that they are) woefully inadequate in solving major social problems?
• How have self-help experts used “A Christmas Carol” to enact personal transformation in one’s life?
• Three Steps:
1) Take a good hard look at where you are today, and the milestones in your life that brought you to this point.
2) If we were to continue the path we are on, where will we be in the future?
3) Knowing the course we are on, what adjustments would we have to make in order to be assured we will go to where we want to go?
• We all need to change in some area; we are not perfect. What areas would we need to change in order to prepare ourselves for Christmas?

And He will come to save us, He will vindicate
So be strong, be strong
God will come to save us, do not be afraid. Don’t fear.

O COME DIVINE MESSIAH
Abbe Simon-Joseph Pellegrin, 1663-1745;
tr. by S. Mary of St. Philip 1877

O Come Divine Messiah,
The world in silence waits the day
When hope shall sing its triumph
And sadness flee away.

Dear Savior, haste!
Come, come to earth.
Dispel the night and show Your face,
And bid us hail the dawn of grace. (v.1).

O Come Desired of nations,
Whom priest and prophet long foretold
Will break the captive fetters
Redeem the long-lost fold.

O Come, in peace and meekness,
For lowly will Your cradle be:
Though clothed in human weakness
We shall Your God-head see.

And give them vic’try o’er the grave.

SAVIOUR OF THE NATIONS, COME
Asc. to St. Ambrose, 340-397; tr. by William Reynolds 1812-1876
1. Saviour of the nations, come
Virgin’s Son make here thy home!
Marvel now, O heav’n and earth
That the Lord chose such a birth

2. Not by human flesh and blood
By the Spirit of our God
Was the Word of God made flesh
Woman’s Offspring, pure and fresh.

3. Wond’rous birth! O wond’rous Child
Of the Virgin undefiled!
Mighty God and man in one
Eager now His race to run!

4. God the Father is His source
Back to God He runs His course
Down to death and hell descends
God’s high throne He re-ascends.

5. Thou, the ageless Father’s peer
Gird Thy might in mortal gear
Take on flesh to rout the wrong
Make our flesh in frailty strong.

6. Now Your lowly manger bright
Hallows night with newborn light
Let no night this light subdue
Let our faith shine ever new.

7. Praise to God, the Father, sing
Praise to God, the Son, our King
Praise to God the Spirit be
Ever and eternally.

WAITING FOR YOUR LOVE
Nick Alexander
Jesus, I am here, waiting for Your love
Jesus, I am here, waiting for Your love

1. I cannot go to the mountaintop
I cannot go to the sea
In my abode, I wait for You
Please meet me.

2. You said that You’d come if only I’d wait for You
You said that I’d find if only I’d seek
You can open the door that I find so hard to unlock
Please meet me.

Jesus, here I wait. Please don’t hesitate.
I know Your Word is true.
So Lord, draw me to You.

WAKE, AWAKE FOR NIGHT IS FLYING
Philipp Nicolai, 1556-1608; Tr. by Catherine Winkworth

1. “Wake, awake, for night is flying,”
The watchmen on the heights are crying;
“Awake, Jerusalem, arise!”
Midnight hears the welcome voices
And at the thrilling cry rejoices:
“Oh, where are ye, ye virgins wise?
The Bridegroom comes, awake!
Your lamps with gladness take! Hallelujah!
With bridal care, yourselves prepare
To meet the Bridegroom, who is near.”

2. Zion hears the watchmen singing,
And all her heart with joy is springing,
She wakes, she rises from her gloom;
For her Lord comes down all-glorious,
The strong in grace, in truth victorious,
Her Star is ris’n, her Light is come.
“Now come, Thou Blessed One,
Lord Jesus, God’s own Son, Hail! Hosanna!
The joyful call, we answer all
And follow to the nuptial hall.”

3. Now let all the heav’ns adore Thee,
Let men and angels sing before Thee,
With harp and cymbal’s clearest tone.
Of one pearl each shining portal,
Where, dwelling with the choir immortal,
We gather round Thy radiant throne.
No vision ever brought,
No ear hath ever caught such great glory;
Therefore will we, eternally
Sing hymns of praise and joy to Thee.

COME DOWN, O LOVE DIVINE
Bianco da siena, d. 1434, Tr. R.F. Littledale, 1867
R. Vaughn Williams, 1906

Come down, O Love divine, Seek thou this soul of mine
And visit it with thine own ardor glowing
O Comforter, draw near, Within my heart appear,
And kindle it, thy holy flame bestowing.

O let it freely burn, Till earthly passions turn
To dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
And let thy glorious light, Shine ever on my sight,
And clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

And so the yearning strong, with which the soul will long,
Shall far outpass the power of human telling.
For none can guess its grace, Till He become the place
Where in the Holy Spirit makes His dwelling

• This is the rare film that shows how one man’s unique claims becomes a threat to the corporate culture, politicians, and the justice department.
• “Faith is believing when common sense tells you not to.” What do you think of this statement?
• It is a grave disservice to “faith” to relegate it to “We have to believe, otherwise life would become unbearable.”
• In what ways does the radical claims of Jesus have veracity even to today?
• “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 ; What does this verse mean to you?
• Who was the real St. Nicholas? When did he live? What great accomplishments did he do? What actions of his led to some of the traditions of today?
• What are examples of commercialism that do not interfere with the meaning of the Christmas season? What are some companies that truly care for those in need, both through philanthropy and through addressing the concerns of their patrons?
